There’s a rather fine piece of reporting up on SFGate today, which takes a thorough look at the sales performance of paid-for titles on the Android Market, with several developers popping up to claim the Market still massively lags other sales channels when it comes to actually making them any MONEY.
Trip Hawkins from Digital Chocolate, a man with a very colourful history in development behind him, provides the site with the best and most direct quote, saying “On Android, people won’t pay for things”.
Hawkins goes on to say that his company’s well-received Tower Bloxx puzzle game has sold fewer than 5000 copies on Android – making it one of the lowest-yielding platforms the game’s appeared on, and leading him to question the worth of any further Android products.

/ May 13, 2010Mr. Hawkins is absolutely right. When I released my first app at $1.49(U.S) I had 25 downloads in two weeks. I made it free supported by ads and now 1.5 months later I have 6736 downloads. The funny thing is that I made more with ads than paid (and the revenue is recurring). But that model doesn’t usually work for games.
The part that gets me is that they don’t want to pay yet demand features be added for an app they got for free!

/ May 14, 2010I’m waiting for paid apps to become available as well. Being a long time Symbian user, to pay 20€ or even 50€ or more for an app that’s worth it isn’t the least odd to me or people with similar background. *shrugs*
