According to a couple of posts by a Three UK staff member in the car-crash of a blog post on its HTC Desire pricing structures, the network will DEFINITELY be selling unlocked Desires in-store from April 20.
And the best news is the price – it wants £349 for an unlocked model. That’s amazing news, assuming Three has sourced a decent number of handsets. Here, allow us to cut & paste the relevant parts of the posts. These messages were posted on April 16:
“The Desire will be available on Pay As You Go at £349.99 from 3 Stores on the 20th
“As I’ve said above, our first batch of Desires (available from launch) will be unlocked. This is the firmware HTC have confirmed for us – RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.15.405.4 – but they could update this at any time”
Now, this has already been mentioned, in fact it was revealed by Three back on April 1, but we thought it might be worth mentioning again seeing as the network seems still confident it’ll have a (different…) stockpile of the sold-out Android phone.
If Three has indeed secured a new batch of Desires for sale on April 20, that £349 price tag will make it the cheapest in the UK by quite some margin. You really ought to think about queuing outside a shop right now, if you want one. It’s only two days away.
Presumably you’ll be heavily pressured into taking out a Three contract while buying the phone, so be prepared for a fight if you plan on just grabbing a phone and legging it.

/ April 18, 2010Three pay as you go Desires will not be unlocked!
If you put a non Three sim in it, it won’t work!

/ April 18, 2010Well whoever’s doing their “community liaison” seems pretty sure this initial batch at least is properly unlocked. Perhaps later batches will be locked to Three and this is a temporary measure until they can get another shipment branded up?
