Layar: More than 1.5m downloads on Android and iPhone

Layar, which is the most well-known of those impressive-looking ‘augmented reality’ apps that sure does look good in adverts but no one can quite work out what to do with it yet, has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times so far – according to Layar’s co-founder Claire Boonstra.

Mobile Entertainment reports Boonstra made the boast at the MIPTV (no idea) conference earlier today, claiming “Augmented reality is here to stay, it’s way more than a gimmick, and it will become a new mass-media.”

At least, it’s more than a gimmick for people who live in cities and use their telephones to find out where Starbucks is.

We live in the countryside, where nothing happens when you start up Layar. It’s definitely a gimmick if you haven’t got 10,000 people living on the same road.

Although it IS fun seeing a futuristic grid layered over the top of the fields, we’ll give it that. Burt the farmer was dead impressed when we showed him that.
