Mark DeLoura, who it would be fair to describe as a bit of an “industry veteran” in the video games world, has announced he’s joining Google as a “Developer Advocate” to help boost the company’s currently rather lacklustre gaming offerings.
He announced the move on Twitter. And here’s his blog. He’s a very public-facing man. He’s almost certainly going to read this after Googling his name and checking his referral stats tonight, so be nice.
Speaking to games site Gamasutra today, Mark outlined a few of his reasons for the move:
“I personally feel that Google hiring someone specifically to focus on games is a signal from the company that they recognize the growing importance of games as a medium… Now how do we make it easier for developers to express themselves and share the experiences they create?”
No idea, Mark. Hold a focus group or something. Get some kids in, see what they say. We look forward to seeing the results.
Mark’s Twitter account has a little work history bio, pointing out his experience in gaming – he’s worked for Nintendo, Ubisoft and Sony, the latter of which he was Manager of Developer Relations for, according to Moby Games – so he ought to have the bursting contacts book required to make a few things happen.
Here’s hoping he likes games based around organising squares and drawing lines for aeroplanes to follow, as there’s going to be a lot of that in his immediate future.
