Steve Jobs: "There's a porn store for Android"

Speaking in a post-iPhone OS 4.0 announcement press conference, Jobs made the extremely bizarre claim of there being a “porn store” on Android where “your kids” can download porn. The quote’s up over on GDGT, and here, if you want to stare at it is disbelief:

“There’s a porn store for Android… you can download it, your kids can download it. That’s a place we don’t want to go, so we’re not going to”

Is there, Steve? Is there really? Is there a “porn store” on Android we can “download” where our children can freely download pornography?

No, there is not. You’d think such a media-aware man as Jobs would know not to try throwing out super-vague claims and hoping people blindly report them as fact. We think Apple may actually have just “jumped the shark” today, in all honesty. That was one of the most desperate press conferences we’ve seen in a long time.

  3. Mikandi is not a licensed Android app and can’t be downloaded through the market. So he was wrong, in a way.

its how you make your competitors look bad… Doesn’t really matter you can easily watch porn on a mac book pro or any web browser be it mobile or not. So to say that he does that to protect kids? hmm dunno. Just trying to stick a dirty image on a competing company.

  5. Considering the vast amount of porn you can access simply but doing a Google search, the fact that Mikandi exists shouldn’t be a surprise at all. However, most ‘kids’ can use google quite well to search for porn where as to install Mikandi you need to bother with installing an app outside of the market and the steps you need to take to do that. 95% of the ‘kids’ aren’t going to bother with all that when they can just Google it and you can access Google in a browser on the iPhone.

Jonathan and Gary are right, it’s just a desperate bad PR ploy. It’s also just another way for Apple to justify their rejecting of apps and taking off others from the App store for whatever reason they want.

  7. Hey folks – just wanted to say thanks for pointing out that he was referring to us, MiKandi, and also that we’re not available in the Android Market. As the only App Store that treats you like an Adult, we’re pleased that despite Google’s preferences for its app marketplace, it allows other apps to be installed on Android devices. The fact that this isn’t possible on the iPhone is why Steve was talking about this – apps that aren’t “signed” by Apple aren’t allowed to be installed on the device.

I don’t want to sound depraved here, but… isn’t that a selling point to Android? That you could have a porn store app via the market or unsupported apk download? For responsible adult people why wouldn’t it exist? That aside, does the iPhone not connect to the internet? Isn’t the internet more depraved then Steve Job’s comments? If you truly want to think about the children, you wouldn’t give them unsupervised access to the internet, a phone, let alone an iPhone. Has anyone, including Jobs, stopped to consider that the Amazon Store app has access to pornographic material? The iPhone pimps morality, but so do some religious organizations. Clearly Android is therefore a threat to the church and our way of life. Android is unconstitutional, politically controversial and harbours terrorists*. It must be stopped now before more lives are… oh sorry… anyway, you get my point.

    * As a stipulation of Apple’s ELUA you are not allowed to use their products for weapons of war and therefore Apple is terrorism free.

Hey Steve! You kids can find porn through Safari! Idiot!

  10. @apoel26 Steve’s point is that Apple will not give your kids porn. The Internet is the free market of the iPhone. Apple don’t control it.

Of course Google/whatever aren’t giving your kids porn either. It’s just an app you can download from somewhere. I think it’s obvious Steve is trying to FUD Android.

However related to the post: this blog is shit, please get your crap off Planet Android. Thanks.
