Everyone got a little excited about the arrival of Level Up Studio’s Touiteur Android Twitter app recently, which has launched in both free and premium versions. Surely Level Up, the maker of the famed Beautiful Widgets, can pull off a classy Twitter client?
Well, not really.
First up – Touiteur takes a long time to boot-up and uses Twitter’s browser authentication system to handle your initial sign-in, so you’re chucked out of the app to your web browser when trying to login for the first time. That’s a pain which needs sorting out.
And maybe we’re just too used to the slimmed-down stylings of Swift and Seesmic, but we’re not keen on the generally busy look of Touiteur. Everything’s a bit fiddly and hidden behind menu screens, plus the on-screen icons are tiny. The colours and font sizes are very customisable, but there’s nothing you can do to make the icons more pressable.
It’s not the sort of thing we expected from the maker of Beautiful Widgets, sadly, nor is the release of a slightly crippled free version – if you want the home page widget, for example, you have to buy the paid-for release.
Therefore, Seesmic remains our #1 Android Twitter app, thanks to a third-round knockout of the unprepared challenger.

/ April 5, 2010I like it, I started to use it on my G1 a week or so ago, much preferred it to Seesmic as Seesmic was horribly slow.. Now have my HTC Desire and have stuck with it, will have a look at Seesmic again..

/ April 6, 2010Most ridiculous review ever, while all the other review say this is certainly the best twitter app on all mobile platform. I use it a lot

/ April 6, 2010as a new Android user coming from iPhone+Tweetie I looked at Twidroid (fugly, clunky), Seesmic (lovely, underdeveloped) then Touiteur (annoying to spell name, great twitter client).
Seesmic is a close second but I use (and bought) Touiteur precisely because it doesn’t use huge soft buttons on the screen (Nexus One) and general thoughtfulness behind the UI design.
They are all slow to update streams compared to Tweetie on iPhone. I’m not sure why.

/ April 6, 2010I’m afraid I’m with Gary on this one. Having played around with Touiteur, Seesmic and Twidroid, I settled on Seesmic. I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but I much prefer it to the others, it just felt right.

/ August 4, 2010I agree with ‘Love Hina’… this review is rubbish. Touiteur isn’t however… but perhaps it’s evolved since the initial review
I’ve only recently moved to Android (HTC Desire) and tried out quite a few of the available twitter apps already. None of them made me think “this is the one”. Except Touiteur. There’s one very good reason for that too… it’s very similar to ‘Gravity’ on symbian/nokia. Gravity is the thing I miss most since moving to Android… it’s what i’ve been hunting down… i’ve even tweeted @janole a few times to try an convince him he needs to port Gravity to Android (he should). For now, I think Touiteur is the closest i’m going to get… and believe me it’s not a bad thing to be compared to Gravity
