According to Electronista yesterday, Vodafone has killed off its paid-for GPS service Wayfinder, resulting in the loss of around 90 jobs in the turn-by-turn navigation department.
“We could not charge for something that others gave away for free” Vodafone UK spokeslady Anna Cloke told Sweden’s Sydsvenkan, in an unusually and brutally honest assessment of the situation.
And that’s Google Maps Navigation, one of the reasons why paid-for GPS is on the way out – along with Nokia’s recent move to start giving away its Ovi Maps tool.
And isn’t it enough just to have a look at good-old traditional Google Maps every few miles to make sure you’re on track anyway?

FREE for end users, all the costs are covered by businesses and establishments that want customers to find them using GPS.
You can now list your establishment, business, products or service on the GPS system for only 10 Euros per year.
Great idea!
This time the consumer wins – no fees
