In case you’re interested, here’s a thorough look at what Opera Mini 5 looks like in some LIVE-ACTION web-use scenarios, plus lots of grabs of the menu screens and interface, because we know that’s what people on the internet really want to see.
It’s a feature-packed browser, no doubt about that – but we’ve found the page-rendering to be a little dodgy so far, and text readability isn’t great unless you zoom right in. But take a look. See what you think. All screens taken on an HTC Magic, running at 480 x 320 resolution.

First impressions – the address and search bar is placed uncomfortably over the top of web pages, adding to the initially cluttered look of the thing. There’s no multi-touch – zooming is handled through taps and a Menu button.

Enabling “fullscreen” in the options menu gives you much more space to work with when out on the scary internet, so make that your #1 priority.

It’s nice to have the Opera-standard icon-based bookmarks page as your default start-up screen. And tabbed browsing is handled much, much better than in Android’s default browser – you get a little visual selection of tabs at the bottom of the screen to scroll through.

The lovely tabs in landscape orientation for you completists.

Opera Mini 5′s page rendering is a little unpredictable. Font sizes and proportions aren’t accurately represented, and what’s with the odd word-wrap effect on this site’s main column (left)? The grab to the right is this site viewed in the default Android browser, as a comparison. It’s much better.

The ‘select text’ and search tool is useful, we’ll give it that. It’ll make nicking people’s content so much easier…

Easily deletable history. Nice touch. As for the Opera Mini 5 beta experience? It’s fast to navigate, has lots of proper “grown up” browser features – but we can’t help but feel it’s a little too cluttered for regular daily use. But it’s probably a grower – once you’ve lived with its advanced feature set it’ll be tough going back to the basic Android browser.
But we’re sticking with the Android default all the same. It displays our column layout properly.
