The best Android games #6: Buka

Time to address the Hexage catalogue! While we do admire the technical performance and presentation of Android darling game Radiant, the simple fact is Radiant’s left/right touch controls are too vague to make it a proper contender as a serious ‘twitch’ based shooter. It’s also less than smooth on the EuroDroid Android 1.6 HTC Magic.

But there are no such problems with Hexage’s other Android big-name-game, though – everything about Buka suits touchscreen play to a tee.

All you do is hammer away at the screen, with your presses keeping bad guys away from your friendly and delicate blue sphere – and long presses ‘charge’ a super beam mega attack weapon.

That’s all you do. Anyone who says you need more than this is using the wrong hardware platform for games – mobile products need to be simple, so you can play them for three minutes while being bounced around on a train. That’s it. Simpler the better. If you want overly-complex games that don’t suit the hardware format, get one of Sony’s PSPs. Sony’s been making a mess of that for years.

And there you go. If you haven’t tried Buka, please do so – it’s such a cute and well-meaning little game. You will love it, especially if you’re a girl.

I do love this game. Just be aware that in the later levels it will become impossible to look away from the phone for minutes at a time, as doing so will mean certain death of your character. Frantic. Fun.
