Crikey, things do move quickly on the hacking/indie development scene. Amateur coder Manup456 has updated his custom Android ROM to incorporate virtually all the features found within Google’s official 2.1 release of the OS found on the Nexus One, with numerous users of the XDA Developers Forum reporting it to be a thoroughly stable and usable implementation of Android 2.1.
Apparently the video camera doesn’t work yet, but anyone using a mobile phone as a video camera deserves what they get. Here are a few images of the Android 2.1 custom ROM running on a T-Mobile G1, courtesy of mega-blog Androidspin’s review of the build:
The downside? You have to have a “rooted” myTouch 3G (AKA Magic) or G1 in order to apply the 2.1 ROM. And rooting the Magic / myTouch 3G is hard, particularly if you’re using the “With Google” UK version.
But still, it’s nice to know a working approximation of Android 2.1 is out there already, waiting for us to eventually work out how to root our bloody phone, just in case Google or the operators decide against rolling out official 2.1 releases through the networks.
