Shareprice.co.uk Android app ruined after v1.3.1 update

If you live in the UK and require live, streaming share price updates on your Android phone, because you’re addicted to watching your life savings diminish by 9% in value per day, the Shareprice.co.uk Android app is perfect – or rather, it WAS perfect.

Sadly, the latest version, while adding a few good features, also adds several bad ones. The font’s smaller (older, more readable version shown below), making everything harder to read. The main data portfolio page doesn’t show the bid/ask prices any more giving you a bit less data to work with, and it now features AdMob adverts stuck along the bottom now.

Worse still, the app now generates a ‘Force Close’ error when attempting to access a share’s details page. Oh dear. And to think it was the very first app we installed on our HTC Magic the very day the courier dropped it off.

Still, it’s nice that they’ve added a separate ‘Indicators’ page which gives you an instant summary of the FTSE, DJIA, FTSE and other index averages, also updating you on currency prices and a snapshot of the latest headlines.

UPDATE 31/12/09:
Shareprice app maker “Tim” informs us that the Force Close error can currently be solved by uninstalling the app, then downloading the new version from the Android Market afresh. Which we did. And it worked. And those instructions now form part of the advice on the app’s Android Market page, too. So thanks, Tim!

All is good with the world again – apart from the share prices we are using the app to watch. It must’ve bottomed out by now, surely? :(

  1. Hi,

Thanks for the honest review. I’ll address some of the points you’ve raised in the forthcoming release.

We’ve had a few users on the Magic who found that uninstalling the app completely and then downloading 1.3.1 from the store again seemed to fix the crash issue. Clearly a flavour of android has caught me out somewhere. Must get more phones to test with ;)

Hoping to see a further review in due course when you’re happier.

    Regards,

    Tim

Blimey, thanks Tim. Very reasonable of you. I’ll give the uninstall “trick” a quick whirl in a minute and hopefully update my SCATHING ATTACK with the results.
